It was a peaceful scene around the Solastella Region Pokémon Laboratory. There was green as far as the eye could see, except in the direction of Romulus's port, and blue, violet, and yellow flowers swayed in the gentle breeze. One flower was particularly beautiful, with half curled petals and a soft lavender colour. Then Aurelius stomped on and over it, leaving a brown boot print stamped onto the flower. Naturally, he didn't even notice, continuing his grumbling complaints as though someone was there to hear him. "Who willingly puts a lab, which is supposedly important, in the middle of a bunch of flowers that look like a three year old drew them around five miles from the port?" he asked, seemingly to nobody, "I get that it's a special nature place, but this is just stupid. No one's gonna take a lab surrounded in flowers seriously. People are stupid, but that isn't an excuse, they could've asked someone who wasn't stupid, who would've told them that putting something as important as the region's only Pokémon lab ten miles away from the port city so that people have to walk through wet grass and mud and flowers, is not a good idea." Aurelius wasn't one who normally talked to himself, though he had never been quiet when he was annoyed with something. But the bright, cheerful yellow of the flowers brought back memories that hurt like a creature with sharp teeth and claws tearing a home for itself in his chest. He knew the monologue wouldn't last long and he knew he didn't even deserve the small comfort it gave, but he also knew that if he let the guiltpainanger take over then he would never get a Pokémon. He burst inside the Solastella Region Pokémon Laboratory with a grin that was more of a grimace than a smile and showed off his fang like teeth. His black eyes automatically scanned the walls, noticing the exits and then the informational posters which informed him that all but the rarest Pokémon could be obtained at the Solastella Region Pokémon Laboratory. His ears twitched down as he realized that he would have to choose a Pokémon. Aurelius sulkily walked over to the poster, leaving a trail of mud behind him. He stared at the explanation of the different types of Pokémon and decided what types he wasn't going to have. Psychic was out because he didn't want anything reading his mind, sweet wonderful Pokémon who'd be his best friend or not, Ghost was out because he wasn't going near something that he couldn't beat up if he had to, and Electric was out....because they were yellowish. He couldn't count out any other types of Pokémon since unlike other children, Aurelius had never had much interest in Pok?mon, but that didn't stop him thinking about what he wanted, which was mostly a Pokémon who would be quiet and not bother him much, though he wasn't sure there was a type like that. He tilted his head to the side, staring up at the poster as though he could stay there for hours, his gaze pointedly ignoring the electric type (because he couldn't break down now, he couldn't). - l _____________________________________ -l Feel as bright and hot as molten steel Designed to leave a scar No one knows what beginnings are l- _____________________________________ l -

"That wasn't very polite, you know," chimed a voice directly behind Aurelius. There, leaning towards the boy and looking rather huffy, was an androgynous creature with an angular face, huge blue compound eyes, and a pair of antennae sprouting from their head, the same grey as their pixie-styled hair. Colorful insect wings flapped agitatedly behind the Pokemorph's back. "Those flowers. You hurt them. The bug Pok?mon need those, you know. And they will be very upset." Petulantly, they -- she? he? it? -- jabbed their pointer finger at Au's chest.
With a disdainful sniff, they flitted away like a hummingbird, propelled by their Beautifly wings. "If you are quite done wrecking our gardens, then perhaps you could tell me what you need." They were still obviously displeased, but they had a job to do. The Beautifly morph was a free spirit by nature, and liked to wander Solastella with their team of bug-types, tasting pollen from every type of flower and sucking the sap from trees, building temporary hives in the forests and making friends with swarms at the many waterside locations. Still, they needed a permanent home for those times when they grew weary of travel, and in return for the shelter that the lab gave them, the morph would work as a lab aide when they were around. Au was so lucky as to run into them.
They did not like Au, not a bit. Very little could have offended them more than the crushing of poor, innocent, pretty, delicious flowers. (Now they wouldn't be delicious or pretty at all, would they? No. They'd be squishy and flat and would taste like boot.) The morph's feet never touched the ground as they moved towards the counter and sat down upon it, lounging back with a scowl on their face.

Aurelius didn't react well to voices coming from behind him when he hadn't heard any footsteps. Sometimes this resulted in painful things for whoever had startled him. This time, it resulted in Aurelius spinning around in a second, losing his balance and making a quick gesture with his left arm to keep from falling. He could feel his face burning. "What?" he snapped, not in a good mood to being with, completely ignoring what the strange looking gijinka had said to him before. Most of Aurelius was fuming about winged gijinkas and how annoying they were, so all he got from the gijinka's words was that they were upset about the garden. Aurelius had no idea why they would be upset about flowers, of all things; they weren't even useful. He might've apologized about it except that the 'garden' was all around the lab. If they hadn't wanted people to walk on it, they should've moved it. "What was I supposed to do, fly?" Aurelius asked sarcastically, though not very loudly. He didn't want to get into a fight; his father would be - would have been disappointed. The thought of his father was enough to make Aurelius swallow a newly formed lump in his throat and all the fur that had bristling to lie down flat. I'm here to get a pokémon. For Dad, Aurelius reminded himself fiercely, horrified that he had forgotten for even a second. "I need a Pok?mon," Aurelius said, his voice low enough to almost be an apology, "I dunno what I want. Not psychic, ghost, or electric." He was bitterly proud that his voice didn't break on the last word. - l _____________________________________ -l Feel as bright and hot as molten steel Designed to leave a scar No one knows what beginnings are l- _____________________________________ l -

The Beautifly Pokemorph tossed back their head as if rolling their compound eyes. "Well, have you ever tried? Flying is quite handy, you know. Also there's a path." Everything about the creature's tone dripped sarcasm, and it suited their voice quite well. There was a mischievous and nasal quality to it, snotty and disdainful. They thought Aurelius to be highly unintelligent, it seemed. And once they were done scoffing, they stared at Au like something distasteful, a half-crushed insect under their boot. (Well, alright, they weren't wearing shoes at all, so just under their foot.)
"Ask politely and be a little more specific and perhaps I can help you." After a moment's pause, though, a wide grin spread across their face, and what appeared to be a very long, tube-like tongue lolled out. The tongue curled delightedly, then retreated back into the Pokemorph's mouth. "No, actually, I have an idea. You need to learn to appreciate the value of a flower, and what better way to do that... than to raise one?" Giggling, the pixie flitted off the counter and towards the back door. They vanished through it for perhaps a few minutes, then returned with three Pok?mon cradled in their thin, sun-browned arms.
"Budew!" exclaimed the Beautifly morph, beaming. The three grass- and poison-types shifted and wiggled in the aide's arms; one looked curious, one looked rather grouchy, and the last was chuckling as though the morph's antics amused it. "Unless you have any better ideas, Mister Flower-Hater, this is what I'll recommend to you. And I'm a professional, so maybe you should take my word for it, hmmmm?" They quirked a thin, angular grey eyebrow, daring Aurelius to argue. He still could, of course, because he couldn't be made to take a Pok?mon he didn't want, but the Beautifly morph seemed quite enthusiastic about their idea. (i'm sorry for these tiny little weenie baby posts :C it seems like with this character everything i have to say comes out in this... energetic BURST hahah. so not much length.)

Aurelius was rather used to ending conversations he didn't want to bother with and the one about flying and paths-that-supposedly-existed was firmly classified as one of those in his mind. It was partly because it was pointless and mostly because Aurelius didn't like the gijinka's pretentious tone of voice. "Yeah, I did," Aurelius said with his widest grin, "Ended up bleeding out on the concrete." Aurelius didn't really get people, but he wasn't stupid. He knew a lot of people were afraid of him and if he just grinned in a way that was a little too friendly and said something disturbing, they backed away or at least abandoned the topic of conversation. Then the gijinka said something about being more polite and Aurelius had a moment of ' You can't say that to me only Dad can tell me that' and ' Try being polite when you've got nothing left at all except this and it's all your own fault and you're barely managing to keep yourself from screaming like you're dying because you are, you have.' It only lasted a second, but the feelings hit him hard enough to leave him winded and trying not to show it. He had just gotten himself under control again when the gijinka left. This time, Aurelius hadn't heard a word they had said, too wrapped up in don't cry, don't cry, don't cry, don't cry.He crossed his arms and made a face that was definitely not a pout, even if it looked like one. It was a I-hate-waiting face and it was different and he was fine and only one of those things was true. The little yelp he made when the gijinka came back in with green wriggling plant things in their arms was enough to shatter the illusion. His hands quickly came up in a defensive posture, though his eyes didn't look away from the budew. No. Just no. They're moving plant bulbs that'll become flowers and I am not looking after flowers. I am not looking after something that will scold me for not looking after flowers."Why would you give a flower Pokémon to someone who doesn't like them?" Aurelius asked, "I wouldn't know how to look after them and I wouldn't try to learn." He paused for a second to try to think of a more specific Pok?mon, his mind spurred into action by the threat of flower Pokémon. No grass, no bug, there's water, but this is an island climate so water will be everywhere, ice but who'd want to be freezing all the time, much rather have warmth or normal, wait those are types - "I'd like a Pokémon that's either fire or normal type," Aurelius declared quickly, deciding that those couldn't be too bad and wouldn't require him to understand anything he didn't already know, "None that have are typically bad tempered or loud. Not taller than two feet and six inches. Preferably similar in shape to an eevee." Aurelius was reasonable sure he could handle something that was near his shape and size when in his eevee form and didn't have any strange powers. He was also certain that if he didn't get out of the Pokémon lab as fast as possible he'd end up with some strange grass Pokémon that ate pollen and used moves like 'flowery dance'. - l _____________________________________ -l Feel as bright and hot as molten steel Designed to leave a scar No one knows what beginnings are l- _____________________________________ l -

The morph looked rather snubbed, and gave the Budew an affectionate squeeze. The curious Budew looked disappointed, but the other two were apparently indifferent. "Well, fine. I'll be back." Grumbling, they flew out the door again. This time they were gone for longer, presumably gathering up a variety of specimens to pick from. When they returned several minutes later, they were carrying several different Pok?mon. "Alright, picky-pants, choose one and make it snappy. I'll get another two of whichever you want. Hmph."
They had managed to sneak in a part-grass-type, at least; one of the Pok?mon in their arms was a Deerling. It looked rather calm despite being squished against several other creatures its size, but it was eying Aurelius warily. Also present were a squirming Zigzagoon, a quietly mewling Skitty, and a Vulpix with only four tails, some of which were still a very pale red. "They're all perfectly sweet, and if you say you don't like any of them I'll suck our your innards." That could have been a joke, maybe, but then the morph opened their mouth, and out snapped their "tongue." It went rigid and straight, and upon closer inspection it became clear that the tube-like structure had a rather sharp tip, and chances were that the morph could pierce skin and drain fluid like a leech. Demonstration finished, they withdrew their tongue and rested their head on the Vulpix's fluffy head fur. It cooed a little in response.

For just a moment Aurelius felt bad for the one budew, who looked disappointed. Then he reminded himself that there was no question that they would be far better off without each other. He shook his head as the gijinka floated away and looked at the ceiling. It only took him a moment to decide that it was a rather boring ceiling with no amusing stains on it, so he scanned the room instead, his body language becoming increasingly tense as he realized that there wasn't much to distract himself with. Thoughts were creeping into his head and of course they were all about - they were all about that thing he wasn't thinking about, couldn't think about. He tried to distract himself with thoughts of his mother, his beautiful, sad, strange mother who seemed to think she would put him in danger if she stayed long, who seemed to believe he would get into danger, and he had, hadn't he? He had - Aurelius had no idea he could feel so grateful to the irritating gijinka for their grating tone. He still didn't like them, but the words they spoke caught his attention as though he was a passenger on a train about to crash and they were his only hope of escape. His black eyes latched onto the Pokémon the same way. Grass flowery Pok?mon, no, Aurelius thought, Pink thing, no, it doesn't look very bright and it's pink. That's almost worse than the flowers. So wriggly brown Pokémon and red and lighter red Pokémon are left. Then the gijinka tried to threaten him and Aurelius could've laughed. He did smile, a real smile, because some fragile flying thing threatening him with pain was so amusing he had to do something. The weak threat reminded Aurelius of the true threat; not getting out of the lab without a Pokémon that would lecture him about stepping on flowers. He wondered if that was on purpose as he took another glance at the Pokémon. The reddish one had the gijinka's head resting on top of it now, and it seemed perfectly content. As far as Aurelius was concerned, this meant it was either very unfazed by life, intelligent enough to realize that struggle was useless, or both. Aurelius thought it was perfect. "The red one's nice," he said vaguely, feeling as though he'd probably get another lecture if he wasn't polite to the Pokémon. He had never been much good at thinking up compliments. - l _____________________________________ -l Feel as bright and hot as molten steel Designed to leave a scar No one knows what beginnings are l- _____________________________________ l -

It was impressive, given the Beautifly morph's high energy levels and lack of patience for Aurelius, that they waited through the Eevee morph's deliberation over his options. Granted, they fidgeted and huffed a little, but they bit back commentary and let Au think. When he finally spoke up, the pixie creature sighed. "Good, Vulpix it is." The other Pok?mon made tiny sounds of disappointment, except for the Deerling; it didn't seem to care either way, and in fact looked somewhat relieved.
The aide headed out the door a third time, and after returning a few minutes later with an armful of three different Vulpix, they paused at one of the drawers in the room to grab out some items. Then they fluttered towards Aurelius, spontaneously lifting up one of the items -- a card -- and holding it in front of his face like a camera. The pure-black card made a clicking sound, and within seconds had lit up with the picture it had just taken. "This is your ID. It holds your money, and it gets you into places, so if you lose it then that's your own stupid fault and good luck getting by without it." They grinned, and thrusted the other item, a small device, at Au. "There's already some money on the card. And here's a phone, it has a Pokedex app on it. If you can figure out how to use it you can see the specifics about these guys. Now hurry up and pick which you want, 'cause they don't have all day and neither do I!" Again, the other Pok?mon's sounds of disappointment gave Aurelius a wave of guilt. He couldn't even think of a reason why he wouldn't have liked them, since he was picking mostly at random and he knew it. He was beginning to feel that he should've taken more time to look them over. Aurelius frowned and refused to allow himself to regret his decision. He hadn't wanted to upset them, but he probably would've anyway since he couldn't take them all. At least the flowery Pokémon looks happy. It was weird feeling bad about those green wriggly things, Aurelius thought, his ears twitching as the aide left. Then the gijinka came back - still fluttering and Aurelius was getting sick of that - with not one but three vulpix. Aurelius blinked and tilted his head slightly to the side, the only sign of surprise he was willing to show in front of the other gijinka. He had expected to simply be given the vulpix and told to leave, but he did remember the high pitched voice saying something about getting two more.... He was distracted by the clicking noise the ID thing made before the gijinka shoved it and a phone into his unresisting hands. Aurelius clutched them without thinking about it and looked down to see that his claws had already left a faint scratch on the phone. It was enough to make him remember his old phone, covered in scratches as though they were some sort of design, with an inscription thiswasnotsomethinghewasgoingtothinkabout.Aurelius forced himself back to the situation he was in and plastered a smile on his face. "If I can't figure out how to use it, then I'll just call you, since you've been so helpful," Aurelius said sarcastically, though his tone was a little more teasing than hostile, an unconscious reaction to the almost nice way the gijinka had spoken to him. He ran his eyes over the vulpix, noting that the first one he had seen seemed to have some strange tail colouration and less tails than the others. That was the one he wanted, for its calm reaction to the gijinka holding it. Nice of it to have a way for me to tell which one it is, Aurelius thought, the grin on his face becoming more real as he studied them. "Middle one," Aurelius said firmly, "With the tail thing." The thought of not choosing the calm vulpix because he looked strange didn't even cross his mind. - l _____________________________________ -l Feel as bright and hot as molten steel Designed to leave a scar No one knows what beginnings are l- _____________________________________ l -

They chuckled a little at Aurelius' teasing tone. Whether they liked him or not, they appreciated a little mean joking now and again. A pixie through and through, they were.
It didn't take long for Au to pick, thankfully. The Beautifly morph looked quite pleased by his ultimate decision. "Do you hear that, friend?" They glanced down at the Vulpix with the strange tails, who looked surprised and maybe a bit... agitated? "Aw, don't be like that. He didn't mean anything about your 'tail thing'. I still think it's lovely." After a second, the Vulpix sighed and nodded, and the Pokemorph beamed. "Wonderful! Okay." They were still holding three objects in one of their hands: three shrunken Pokeballs, belonging respectively to each of the Vulpix. The morph muttered apologies to the Vulpix that hadn't been chosen (neither one seemed tremendously bothered, and in fact one looked like it had dodged a bullet by not being picked), then enlarged two of the Pokeballs and recalled them. This left the strange-tailed Vulpix and his Pokeball.
"Take this," said the aide, handing the Vulpix's Pokeball over to Aurelius. "If you don't know how to use it, then you've been living under a rock and the internet is your friend." They nodded, and gently placed the Vulpix down on the ground. He blinked up at Au, head tilted. "We don't name any of the Pok?mon in the lab, except for little pet names that aren't meant to stick, so it's up to you two to decide on a name for him. He's yours now." They nodded, then leaned in close to Aurelius, eyes narrowed. "And you'd better take good care of him."
They flitted backwards, grinned, and gestured towards the door. "Alright, get out now. I have work to do." Ever-helpful, yes sirree. Aurelius was just a little surprised by the gijinka's laugh. He hadn't realized that they were playing a game. Not a nice game, but a game, which meant that the aide wasn't really all that prissy and only acting that way to annoy him. He immediately liked the gijinka better, almost going as far as giving them a true smile before thinking, No, they weren't joking about the flowers. Better to keep my distance. He didn't realize it, but as the other gijinka decided that he had made a good choice, Aurelius let out a quiet sigh of relief. That didn't last long because the next thing the gijinka did was comfort the vulpix about what Aurelius had said, which made him feel both terrified (because the gijinka could easily decide that he had hurt the vulpix's feelings and needed a different Pokémon who could put up with him) and guilty (because he needs to learn to think before he talks and he knows that but never does it). He barely noticed the other two vulpix being taken from the room, but he knew enough to be grateful they didn't make any noises of disappointment. He took the pokeball without thinking anything more than 'not a good idea to annoy that gijinka', his claws making a soft clinking noise against the hard plastic. "The internet is never your friend," Aurelius muttered, repeating the words his father had often said to him. Then he realized what he had said. His ears pressed themselves to his head and he listened intently in a way that had become routine. He wasn't sure why, but the way the vulpix looked up at him made the weight feel a little lighter, enough to allow him to speak. "Yeah, we'll find a name," he said roughly, meeting the gijinka's eyes without fear or defiance, "I'll take care of him." After the gijinka aide's dismissal Aurelius turned to look at the vulpix. His white, light red, red tails reminded Aurelius of blood. He thought, Maybe I should've taken one of those green things, but I can't change that now, I can't change the past, no matter how important it is, no matter what, don't snap, you'll scare the Pok?mon, Dad wouldn't want that, want this, I have to, I have to -He closed his eyes and opened them again, giving the vulpix a weak smile. This worried the vulpix more than the silent stare had, but he was polite enough not to say anything. "C'mon, let's go," he said, his mind claiming he was breathing air, his body claiming it was water, "We'll have to avoid the flowers, though, the gijinka's nuts about them." Aurelius walked out of the door and the vulpix followed him. They both stared at the green world outside, but for very different reasons. - l _____________________________________ -l Feel as bright and hot as molten steel Designed to leave a scar No one knows what beginnings are l- _____________________________________ l -
