AS the sun began to set on her first day as a Pok?mon Trainer, Alice lazily biked down the long brick pathway that was Verda Bridge. As she pedaled the young woman chattered away blithely, rattling off all there was to know about her. Perched on the front of the bike, tucked into the woven basket tightly attached there, was Yorick. As he listened to his new trainer babble, he sniffled drying the last of his tears from his eyes. Every so often Alice would pause in her speaking to smile down at him and ask a question. So far he had yet to respond in any way other then welling up with tears, so she decided not to push it. Giving the Cubone a tender pat on the head, she focused her eyes on the sunset.
Streaks of purples, golds and pinks arched across the sky, reflecting on the gleaming ocean. The sight was breathtaking, so much so that Alice didn't mind in the least the long time it would take to cross the bridge. Her father had warned her not to travel by night, but she had dawdled so much in Romulus, that she felt continuing was the only way to catch up. Besides, Al knew her father was only worrying over nothing. She was a bright girl, and now she had Yorick to protect her.
"I think we can make it nearly to Remus if we go all night!" Alice chirped to Yorick, "I'm much to excited to be tired! And I suppose we can always camp off to the side if the need be."
Shyly, Yorick gave a tentative nod, then flinched closer to Alice. Honestly, he thought traveling by night was an awful idea. Didn't she know what hid in the dark? Monsters! Sea Creatures! Demons! Of course, he wasn't going to point any of that out. She might get angry and leave him here alone! Then where would he be?
After a good 20 minutes of silent biking, Alice stopped for a rest. By now twilight had fallen, and nearly all the stars were visible in the sky. With a soft smile, she craned her neck back, picking out the constellations.
"Look, Yorick! There's your constellation!" she said brightly, lifting the Cubone up gently and pointing to a cluster of stars. He gave a frightened squeak, squinting his eyes shut, before his curiosity got the best of them and he slowly peeked out of one eye.
"See?" Al continued, "There's the club, those are the tale, and those four are the body. It's supposed to be the first Cubone to ever have walked alongside a trainer."
For another moment, she was quiet. A small tickle of homesickness trickled into being. Her father had loved the stars. On the other hand, it was comforting to know that even though she was in a vastly different land, the sky was still the same. Seeing the familiar constellations were like seeing friends from home. The thought brought a smile and a content sigh forth, before Al swung her leg back over her bike and pressed on.

A WILD SHINY POKÉMON APPEARED !
The moon hung low in the sky like a pearl, shimmering with an ethereal light. Clouds lazily crossed its gaze, glowing with energy as they caught the rays of moonlight. The ocean below was a clear, still black - only an array of colourful fairy lights draped around the path of the bridge offered illumination amongst the verdant walkway that stretched from Romulus to Remus.
Suddenly, however, the tranquility of the night was broken as a high-pitched scream tore through the air.
”Help! Help me, I’m falling!”
A little way ahead of Alice and her Cubone, a small Ralts was struggling to hold on to the bridge - part of the old brick wall had collapsed, and the poor pokémon was barely clasping the edge. The Ralts seemed a little smaller than usual, and there was something peculiar about his head - though it was hard to tell in the faint light, it seemed to be a different colour to usual. Part of the bridge broke away, debris scattering across the waves below. Menacingly, there was a whoosh as the wind picked up and sent water crashing against the tall stone arches that supported the bridge. ”Do something quickly! I can’t hold on much longer!” 44aacc [/sub][/blockquote][/blockquote]

A strong breeze began to pick up as Alice pedaled, though she showed no intention of stopping to seek refuge from the gusts. And quite honestly, she didn’t mind it much at all. The wind carried with it a strong scent of the sea, as well as fresh electricity in the air that might have hinted to rain. Then, jarringly, it carried something else as well – the terrified shrieks of a Pokémon.
The sudden squeal startled Alice out of her stupor. She jerked her handlebars in reaction, sending her front wheel skidding out from other her. With a sharp gasp, both girl and Cubone were sent tumbling onto the path. Yorick rolled head over heels, landing with a sharp squeal and immediately bursting into tears. Alice only slid, her hands taking the brunt of the fall, as her legs tangled in her bike. Disoriented, she lay there, before a second scream pushed her into action.
Kicking her bike aside, Al scrambled to the edge of the bridge, peering over to find a breed of Pokémon new to her clinging to a crumbling piece of brick. Horrified, Alice craned forward, reaching as far as she could. Her fingers tips were a good foot away from the small Pokémon.
"Don’t worry! I’m coming! Just hold on!" Alice urged as spray from the swelling wave soaked her face. She leaned further, dangerously so. At this point Yorick, who had realized his tears were not being comforted by his usually attentive new trainer, caught sight of her situation. He gave a sharp yelp, dashing over and yanking on her skirt. Didn’t she know how dangerous that was?
Pulling her self back up, Alice glanced over her shoulder at the frantic Cubone and grinned at it. At this, Yorick balked. Grinning? This was not a time for grinning! This was a time for…for running! “Good idea, Yorick!” said Alice, scooping the Cubone into her arms. She grasped his legs firmly, then leaned back over the side. At this, Yorick began struggling and sobbing anew. “Uunf, Yorick please! The little guy’s in t-trouble – ouch. Use your – unf – club!”
Still largely hysterical, Yorick began waving his bone club at the Ralts – with his height as well as the club added to the mid, they were well in reach.
<H-h-h-h-hurry up and g-grab it!> he yelped at the Ralts, certain all three of them were going to go tumbling into the surf at any moment.

The Ralts watched as Yorick and Alice leapt to his aid - who were these trainers? Where had they come from - the growing storm started to whip up faster, wind turned from gentle breeze to a biting blade.
”I- I can’t reach it! Come closer!”
he pleaded, straining to hold on in the increasingly strong wind - one of the disadvantages of the open ocean was that wind speeds were typically higher than on land. ”O-okay, I’m going to swing!” The Ralts closed his eyes, steeling himself and building up his courage to make the jump. He slowly began to swing, though it was hard to force his body against the blustery gale. Eventually, he built up enough momentum to leap... and miss. ”NOOOO!” he screeched as his fingers failed to grasp onto the outstretched bone. The Ralts scrambled in vain to hold onto the wall against the force of gravity - slipping down a few feet further. Slowly, the rains came - specks of water at first, but soon whole rivulets fell as the heavens let rip - the previously clear moon was obscured by dark clouds, as even the starlight faded. It was difficult to tell in the rain, but the Ralts was sure that some of the drops snaking down his face were in fact tears. ”Am I... going to die?” he asked, the words cracking on his lips as he did. ”I... I don’t think I have the strength anymore..” 44aacc [/sub][/blockquote][/blockquote]

Alice bit back several of her father’s favorite curse words as the tiny Pok?mon lunged for the bone club…and missed, skidding further down the side of the bridge. She quickly hauled Yorick back up, giving him a tight squeeze to try and ease his quaking sobs. Again the trapped Pok?mon cried, though this time it was little more then a croak, and barely audible above the gale that was quickly brewing. Alice took a deep breath, squinting her eyes shut. Okay, think, think! Who was the bravest person Alice knew? Why, it was her mother by far. Okay…so what would her mother do?
Swallowing hard, Alice knew with grim determination exactly the answer to that question.
“I’m sorry, Yorick, but I need you in your Pokeball for a bit,” Al said, not taking the time to wait for a response. Every second was another second the Pok?mon was in danger. She clicked the button in the center of the Pokeball, and with a burst of red light, Yorick was swallowed up inside (much to his relief). Then she kicked off her shoes and once again made her way to the edge of the bridge.
“I’m coming! Hold on!” Alice called, needing to raise her voice to a yell to be heard. Gently, Alice slid her legs over the edge of the bridge. Wind bit at her calves, her skirt plastered against her thighs as the storm pressed against her back. Her stomach and chest was still firmly against the hard gravel of the pathway. Slowly, she slid her body under the rails built to keep pedestrians from falling into the ocean. Blind to how far she was from the support beam below, Alice arched her toes, reaching for any sort of solid ground. Soon she only hung from the bridge by her arms. Shaking, Al stretched as far as she could – and felt her toes touch cold brick. More confidently, she lowered herself, clinging to a side beam as she crouched. Alice glanced down, half expecting to find the Pok?mon gone, swallowed up by the sea. With a breath of relief, however, she noted it was still there.
“Alright…alright, here we go,” Alice breathed, more to herself then to the Pok?mon. She stripped her jacket from her arms and slowly moved to lay on her stomach, praying that the bricks would hold her weight. It was strong enough to hold a bridge up, right? It could definitely take a slender, small girl.
Right? RIGHT?
“Grab on,” Alice again said, letting the jacket fall – one arm was tightly wound around her wrist, the other falling in front of the Pok?mon’s face. She prayed to whatever God that was listening that they’d both make it out of this okay – with light colds at the worst. In the back of her mind, she recalled her mother yanking her inside after a light drizzle, telling her the rain would be the death of her, that her illness would return if she weren’t careful. Swallowing, Al stretched further to give the creature more slack.
“I won’t let you fall,” Alice promised boldly, impossibly. “Just hang on tight.”

Ralts, it is said, though by whom I could not tell you, have the ability to sense human emotions using the horns that protrude from their heads. The Ralts in this story, however, was definitely not seeing this as a benefit. The wave of emotion that tore through him was stronger than the storm - a mix of anxiety and desperation that threatened to reduce him to rubble. His own consternation was reflected in Alice, and this only served to worsen his condition.
His vision began to falter, going fuzzy - partially with the brunt of the emotional force he was feeling and partly from the storm. He closed his eyes, letting his helmet hide him away from the girl and protect the last of his dignity.
I...I’m sorry.
And then, tearing through the black that had a enveloped him, a new emotion. It was small and bright and warm and fierce, indefatigably fighting against the bitter cold. Hope. His eyes shot open, and he tilted his head back, his petit fingers straining to support him.
Alice was half bent over the edge of the bridge, the Cubone was no more. Instead, her jacket was flapping helplessly in the breeze, inching closer.
"I won’t let you fall... Just hang on tight"
”Is that a promise?”
he asked, his voice barely a whisper. He didn’t need her to answer. Slowly, he found the strength to take most of the weight on one hand, and he let the other crawl across the sheer bridge face till he was close to the jacket. Finally, it was within touching distance. He bravely stepped closer, aiming to maximise his chances of avoiding a spell in the storm ocean before. He was done falling. It was time to fly. With a grunt, he leapt from his vantage point, and clasped the jacket’s sleeve with both hands, feeling it immediately tighten under his weight, until it was taut and at the point of tearing. At any moment the fabric could snap, but he was done being on the point of dying - his urge for life had overtaken him, he was going to live for another day. Hoping his weight was enough for the trainer to pull up, he called out above the roar of the storm. ”C..Can you pull me up?” 44aacc [/sub][/blockquote][/blockquote]
