CRITICS LEFT ‘BORED' BY ACERO EXPO
The largest fashion event in Solastella ended last night in gorgeous Acero Beach. The week of fashion, which which took place at a number of venues across the island was filled with some stunning designs by the best fashionistas in the world. Critics, however, had mixed views. The Solastella Gazette’s own fashion correspondent, Miles Dupoint, said that the ideas were "tenacious, but ultimately failed to break new ground", while the former editor of Chic magazine, Julia Somerset told our reporters that she felt “bored” by the showing from home-grown designers.
Foreign designers, on the other hand, had a very strong showing, with particular praise being heaped on the Lilycove Collective, which has gone from strength to strength over the past year. Somerset noted that the Collective “had all the right colours, and all the right shapes - they completely led the pack. They’ve picked up on the hottest fashion trends and they’ve taken it one step further.” Some fear that this means that Hoenn designers are now overtaking Solastellans - though the rivalry in the industry is cut-throat even at a sub-national level, there is a particularly competitive relationship with the other archipelago state.
“Once upon a time, Hoenn used to import fashion from Solastella en masse. I mean, did you see that hideous sarong Phoebe would wear before she started wearing the designs of Gerard Guilliano? But over the last two years, it feels like Solastellan creativity has stalled while Hoenn has continued to push boundaries. More and more stores in big cities are starting to see imports in the other direction.”
“When I was editor of Chic, one of my first major issues was the ‘Warfare Issue,’ which contrasted leading designers from both regions, but now there’s not so much a war as an invasion.”
Though much of the attention and ire has been on designs from Hoenn, Miles has his own personal pick.
“Although I was very impressed by the LC at the Expo this year, I’m actually more intrigued by the designs that are coming out from the House of Fiorina this year. Unlike some of the other designs we see, they straddle the line between haute and not - they’re certainly the most commercial designs. Some people criticise Solastellan designs for not being ‘bold’ enough, but I don’t think people are looking to be wowed right now, they want something they can actually wear. That’s where the Lilycove Collective has it all wrong.”
