S's first instinct, upon walking off the ferry to Romulus Isle, was to yawn and stretch.
It had been a long ferry ride - long and cramped. His quarters were economy, which was cheap but uncomfortable, particularly when it rained. For at least a week S had dreamed about being able to walk somewhere beyond the closed peripheral of his room, or the open-yet-almost-as-limited confines of the deck; it had been monotonous enough that after the third day, he spent almost all of his time sleeping, waiting. Yet now that he was actually able to walk around Romulus isle - to go anywhere he wanted, really - he couldn't think of anywhere he wanted to go.
So S's first couple of moments were spent yawning, stretching and cracking his knuckles and neck. By the time he and his trusty backpack were through with their off-shore warmup, nearly everyone else had left the port, and the few remaining people bustling around the docks were people he did not recognize. Perhaps they had lived and worked in Romulus Isle? It doesn't really matter, i guess, S thought.
It was easy to find the building, even without the help of a map; S sauntered through the doors of it in a matter of minutes, already beginning to grow bored with the scenery. Fortunately, the inside of the lab was different enough; S didn't recognize half of the machinery in the building, and the interior decorators had done a not-half-bad job of making the place look not mundane.
"Hola?" S called out as he entered. "This is the place that hands out free Pok?mon, right?"

A small kid heard a Spanish greeting from the door. He was writing in his journal. He was experimenting on something with some sort of machine, that looked like it was measuring temperature in Kelvin. The kid was small, and had long, red hair. He turned around to the incoming person. "Greetings." The small child said. "My name is Kon." The child introduced himself. "This is the Romulua Isle Lab. Here, we can give you a starter Pokémon of your choice. Bear in mind, your starter can be any unevolved Pok?mon. " He took one long look at S. His blue eyes narrowed. "Unless you are here for tourism. Please look around as much as you please." He turned back around to his machine and scribbled along with his pencil.
The Lab was in a nicer condition than expected. The walls and shelves were just a little bit dusty, but the couch and decoration were well-placed (in their own view) and neatly organized. The kid, believe it or not, was actually one of the few lab assistants. He was fiddling with a black, what seemed like a key card, and a red-ish looking phone.

Almost as soon as Kon began to speak, S's concerntration slid from him like water off a teflon pan. Not that it could be helped; Kon's words just magically had the effect of transforming to "romulua island lab blah blah blah tourism." Breaking any kind of eye contact they may have briefly shared, S flung himself onto the couch as if he had just run a marathon, and lay sprawled out among the surprisingly comfortable cushions like a stereotypical psychiatric patient.
Important tasks were ahead: Apparently, the starter selection rules on this island were very relaxed. Naturally, this would have to be exploited as much as possible. Mentally, he tallied the number of elemental types of Pok?mon he knew, ticking them off on his fingerpads. The next step was to subtract the ones he could probably find in the wild - that left eight.
six of the eight Pok?mon types were right out, for now. If he remembered AP Pok?mon sciences correctly, Dragon and dark 'mons were likely to be aggressive and untrainable. Ice types, while not aggressive, did not trend towards affection. Ghost types were NEVER to be trusted, even tame ones. Out of the remaining four - steel, fire, psychic and ice - steel and fire didn't go well with water, so he would have to discount them for now.
Well, really, fire didn't mesh with them, either. why, though...S pondered what he was forgetting about this equation. There was one purely fire-type that broke the rule on general type discompatability.
The relevation came to him at the same time awareness did of the fact that his MP3 player had somehow worked it's way from it's pocket to between his fingers, save for the earbuds - those had been stretched across one knee. Without a hint of embarassment S rose, gathered his errant belongings and checked his pockets to make sure he hadn't forgotten anything else. To his relief, he had not.
"K-on." he said to the red phone as he approached the lab assistant's location once again. "This place offers Vulpix as a starter Pok?mon, correct?"

Kon nodded his head quietly. Though the rudeness of just throwing themselves on a couch, he didn't mind it. "Vulpix? Right away, sir." The kid went to the back of the room. He opened a drawer and starts looking for "V" Pok?mon. When he closed the drawer, he had three inactive Pokeballs. He walked back over to S. He took a seat in the chair. Firstly, before anything, he took a quick snapshot of S with the black looking keycard. He then punched in some kind of codec into the device. It was actually charging his currency. "Okay, so now i'm going to charge you some money. I'll charge you one hundred soleres. Unless if you want your money in Parsennes. Also, please pick on of these, please." He placed the three Pokeballs, containing Vulpix in every one. He gave S a red phone. "That's a Smartphone. Please use it wisely. It can assess the internet, text, and even be used as a Pokedex. It can scan Pok?mon to see their personality and level." Kon was still flickering through the keycard to sort out it's settings. [OOC: YAY FOR MESSY AND MUMBLED UP STUFF.] Choice 1Name: CHOICE Gender: Female Level: 5 Moves: Ember, Tail Whip Ability: Flash Fire Nature: This Vulpix loves to play the 'bitchy' type. She thinks she's all that, and she hates being bossed around. She does whatever she wants, and chooses what others do and who they love and like. Choice 2Name: CHOICE Gender: Female Level: 5 Moves: Ember, Tail Whip Ability: Flash Fire Nature: This Vulpix loves to play. She's very childish and thinks everything is a game. Especially battling. She's a true sweetheart in the inside, though. Choice 3Name: CHOICE Gender: Female Level: 5 Moves: Ember, Tail Whip Ability: Flash Fire Nature: This Vulpix is sweet, to strangers and friends alike. She loves everybody, and she doesn't believe that there are bad people in this world. With just a little talking to, everyone can live in unison, this is what she believes.

S winced, slightly, as the camera flash went off. It was rather unexpected, but not in a bad way - hopefully, this picture didn't make him look like a monster. He had had enough of that kind of nonsense with his yearbook photo. He listened to Kon's speech politely enough, interjecting only once: "Yes, charge it all to solares, please.". He wasn't entirely familiar with Solastella's currency system, so it was probably better to play it safe and go with the general, all-purpose symbol.
There was other, slightly more important business to take care of now: choosing a pokeball. Carefully, S considered his options.
It was impossible to discern which Pok?mon was the best at this point - fortune have given him a choice between one and three, with no outside variables to determine which would be the best choice. Well...this wasn't exactly true. He could always ask K-on. but what would be the fun in that? there was no challenge, no silent battle of wits. S got down to eye-level with the three choices of pokeball, as if examining them in detail.
All three balls looked in perfect physical condition; if not new, than close enough to it. S frowned; he wouldn't be able to use that as judgement criteria. It came down to arbitrary ordering, then: where would the owners of the Pok?mon lab be most likely to place the least desirable Pok?mon?
in the most popular spot, it would follow. Therefore, S realized, he couldn't pick the second pokeball; studies showed that given a choice of integers between 1 and 3, 2 would be the overwhelmingly most common choice. By that logic, the least popular number would probably contain the best Pok?mon, which meant...
"I'll take this one", S said, grabbing at the third pokeball. He weighted it briefly, tossing it once in his hand before realizing that there was something alive inside the tiny spherical containment unit. almost (ALMOST) gently, he clipped the pokeball, right-side up, to his belt. the first of many, probably.
S accepted the smartphone with a smile and a "thanks" - it was an awfully generous gift. Internet, texting capability AND pokedex function? Modern-day Pok?mon trainers really have a nice ride, S thought. I should have done this earlier.
A twinge of memory shot through S, though he suppressed it as hard as he could. a couple of seconds later, and it was gone. S realized that he had involuntarily tensed his shoulders, and he untensed, chuckling a little to himself.
"Kon?" he asked. "Is there anything else i should know, or might need?"

Kon nodded his head. He charged S his money into the black key card and gave it to him. "This is your Trainer Card. Everything is automatic. It will record the Pokémon you have with you now, and when you win badges, they will appear here. Also, the Smartphone is a PokeDex, be sure to fill it up with lots and lots of Pokémon. It will help us with research in the future. And that PokeBall is yours. We don't have a starter pack, so you may want to stop by the store and pick up some essentials. Pokeballs are a must have to catch Pokémon. Ƨ100 Should be more than enough for your essential needs. Get some potions too." Kon pondered. Was there anything else to say? Oh yeah, there was one thing. "Good luck." Kon winked. He loved seeing new trainers off to the new world. It can access the Gazette online, surf the web and even has a built in Pokedex! Not to mention its calling, e-mail and text messaging prowess. It’s not the best smartphone in the world, but nonetheless, it gets the job done![/i]

For one thing, this one is entirely electronic, and it automatically updates itself as you progress through the region. It also acts as a credit card and ID badge. At the same time, it measures your progress across different disciplines.[/i]
