PORT REMUS BILL TO APPEAR BEFORE ASSEMBLY!
A new constitutional crisis has erupted in front of the Legislative Assembly which may result in a major rethink of the Solastella League. A proposal has been presented before the League to decouple Romulus and Remus Isle and allow Remus to develop its port to take traffic in both directions.
Presently, as part of the Solastella Development Plan, Romulus and Remus Isle are treated as one unit - the Twin Isles. As with every other League region, the Twin Isles allow trainers to enter and leave freely, so that the ferry system can carry trainers to and from the Isles. However, as any trainer in Solastella can tell you, this two way port is divided between the two islands - trainers can only enter via Romulus Isle and they can only leave via Remus Isle.
Now, however, Remus Isle could find itself disconnected from Romulus Isle - a bill proposed anonymously to the Assembly has detailed plans for an expansion of the two ports in the island, so that both are two way ports. In essence, it means that trainers would be able to travel from Romulus Isle straight to the Archipelago if they so chose to do, though League Regulations mean that trainers will not be permitted to bypass the Verda Bridge. Ferries, according to the League Commission which set up the free travel system, may not be used for transport between different parts of the same League Region.
Many new trainers would hail the bridge as it allows them to travel amongst the Archipelago freely - traffic on Verda Bridge has been steadily rising over the past few months, and some see this as a way to ease pressure when many visitors don’t intend to prioritise the League. Environmentalists have immediately registered their concerns over the development, which would develop Romulus Isle into a full-fledged port and turn Remus Village into a larger settlement with a full-size port of its own, re-christening the village as the town of Port Remus.
Though this would bring greater development to the Twin Isles, some fear that it may ruin the pristine, small-town charm that the Twin Isles have been known for, as well as mark the start of a differentiation between the two. The two would increasingly become separate administrative regions, which particularly troubles Marie Cuthbert and Dr. Jensen Kallei, the Governors of Marshtown and Sierraville respectively. Enjoying a close personal relationship, they have long pushed for less federalism in Solastella and a combination of more administrative regions. The Marsmonte League Region is the largest region economically and geographically and is the political centre of Solastella. If a Twin Isles split proves to be successful or even economically beneficial for Twin Isle citizens, many analysts fear that Marshtown might push for independence from the Marsmonte League Region, possibly with a “Marsmonte South” designation instead.
Such a move would fragment Marsmonte’s current political dominance and damage Sierrans more than Marshtowners. That isn’t to say that there isn’t currently a lot of inequality amongst LRs - Marshtown has a higher population in just one of its districts than across the whole of the Twin Isles. Even if the Twin Isles somehow stayed together and Marshtowners got the independence from Sierraville they are increasingly clamouring for, each individual Reman would have approximately ten times more of an influence in national politics compared to other citizens.
Small wonder then, that some people are saying the government should stop focusing on the issue of Port Remus and focus on the issue of unequal federalism.
