so, i think i speak for everyone when i say that sometimes in the Pok?mon games it can be really frustrating having to give up a potentially useful move because you need to have a HM move to get around. flying-types getting stuck with fly or defog, water-types getting stuck with dive, and whichever poor sucker gets stuck with cut... it can be frustrating.
the thing about HM moves in-roleplay is that the moves themselves are things that, for the most part, wouldn't necessarily be impossible without the use of an HM. a Pok?mon with sharp claws could probably cut down shrubs without the use of an HM to teach them how, or a strong Pok?mon could move boulders without the use of strength. this makes it even more frustrating than in the games, because roleplay isn't limited by gameplay mechanics.
however, the way that HMs seem to be set up on this site is good, and getting rid of them altogether would be silly. what i'm proposing is this: perhaps we could offer the option for members to decide they want their Pok?mon to know the HM move, without taking up a slot? they wouldn't be able to use the move in battle, because it's technically not in their "arsenal"; it becomes an overworld skill rather than an in-battle skill. there would be an alternative move list for the overworld skills, as well as the list of attacks which are usable in battle. they could instead decide to take up one of their Pok?mon's four moves with a HM move per the usual, which would make it both usable in battle and outside.
thoughts? i only bring it up, really, because moves like dive and surf will be necessary to see everything on solastella, and i'd rather not have to accommodate this by having a HM slave that can't be used in battle for its lack of versatility. In the games it was obnoxious, and having to justify it in-character would be more so.
